Autism Services

Autism is a general term for a group of complex disorders of brain development. These disorders are characterized, in varying degrees, by difficulties in social interaction, verbal and nonverbal communications and repetitive behaviors. Autism can be associated with intellectual disability, difficulties in motor coordination and attention as well as physical health issues.

Autism Assessment Services for Children and Young Adults

The Hazelwood Specialty Clinic offers autism assessment services consisting of three appointments with a psychologist and one appointment with a pediatrician. Here is what to expect;

First appointment - takes about two hours and includes the parent/guardian.

Second appointment - ranges in time from one to two hours for younger children with the parent/guardian participating. For older children, the parent/guardian remains in the waiting area.

Third appointment - is a feedback session lasting 30 minutes. The parent/guardian attend this session and it is their choice to bring the child or attend alone. The outcome of the assessment will be shared and referral for services and other recommendations will be provided at this time.

With consent, the psychologist will speak with school personnel and other professionals providing services to your child to obtain additional information that may be helpful for the assessment.
